Baptism is a sacrament in Christianity that symbolizes the believer's death to sin and their resurrection to new life in Christ. It is a public declaration of one's faith in Jesus Christ and their commitment to follow Him.
In the Bible, baptism is often described as a symbol of death and resurrection. In Romans 6:3-4, Paul writes, "Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."
In Colossians 2:12, Paul writes, "having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead."
Baptism by immersion is the most common form of baptism in Christianity. It is believed to be the most accurate representation of the biblical imagery of death and resurrection.
If you are a Universal Life Church minister and you have been asked to officiate a baptism by immersion, here are some steps you can follow:
- Gather the necessary materials. You will need a baptismal gown, a baptismal font, and water.
- Prepare the baptismal site. Make sure the baptismal font is clean and filled with water. If you will be using an open body of water, ensure the depth of the water and overall security.
- Welcome the congregation. Welcome the congregation to the baptism service and introduce the person who will be baptized.
- Read scripture verses about baptism. Read scripture verses that speak about baptism, such as Romans 6:3-4 and Colossians 2:12 (see below for more).
- Ask the person who will be baptized to make a confession of faith. Ask the person who will be baptized to make a confession of faith in Jesus Christ.
- Baptize the person. Immerse the person in the water, saying, "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
- Pray for the person who has been baptized. Pray for the person who has been baptized, asking God to bless them and help them to grow in their faith.
- Conclude the baptism service. Conclude the baptism service by thanking the congregation for their participation.
